Truth Bounties

Trust infrastructure
for the modern world

Truth Bounties is a powerful tool to build credibility, challenge misinformation, and resolve disputes.

Why Truth Bounties

Anyone can say they're right, but talk is cheap.

Truth Bounties lets you put money behind your claims. Anyone who can prove you wrong gets the money. When you put skin in the game, people have a reason to believe you.

See how it works
  1. Confidence made visible

A Truth Bounty turns “trust me” into a powerful signal of credibility. The bigger the bounty, the louder the message.

  2. Anyone can challenge

Critics don't need a platform to be heard. Anyone with evidence can challenge bountied content.

  3. Independent Arbitration

Disputes go to professional arbitrators through the American Arbitration Association — not a popularity contest, crowd vote, or algorithm.

A platform for building trust

About Truth Bounties

Credibility you can verify. Authors back their claims with real money. Challengers can test them. Independent arbitrators settle it.

The Big Picture

Truth Bounties empowers truthtellers to signal their credibility by holding themselves accountable.

Our vision

A world where information flows freely and facts separate from noise.

Why it works

Trust isn’t built on words alone. It’s built on stakes — having something to lose if you're wrong.

That's why a warranty makes a company's product credible. If the product fails, the company must replace it.

That’s why a contract makes a promise believable. If you break the contract, you have to pay.

Truth Bounties applies this logic to statements. By attaching a bounty to your claim, you have something to lose — and people have a reason to believe you.

Real Stakes

Money on the line, not just words.

Self-Sorting

People who know they're right can post a bounty with confidence. People who don't cannot.

Signal Trust

The badge tells the world about your bounty.

Post a bounty. Invite a challenge. Let an independent arbitrator settle it.

Independent arbitration

Who decides

Every challenge that reaches arbitration is administered by the American Arbitration Association — a non-profit organization that has set the standards of fairness, due process and neutrality in alternative dispute resolution since 1926. Truth Bounties pays the AAA the same amount regardless of who wins a challenge, so the arbitrators do not have a stake in the outcome.

The founders

Mike Gilbert & Bao Kham Chau

Truth Bounties comes from two people who’ve spent years studying the same problem from different directions. Mike approaches trust and misinformation with economics — how incentives shape what gets said and what gets believed. Bao looks at it as an engineer — how the systems we build shape what spreads and what doesn't. Both are also trained in law, and both teach it. They hold the same idea: the internet isn't short on information; it's short on tools to tell the honest from the dishonest. Truth Bounties is their attempt to help.

Signal trust

How It Works

By attaching money to a claim — and opening that claim to challenges — anyone can demonstrate confidence in what they say.

6 monthsChallenge window

After you post a bounty, anyone can challenge for six months.

14 daysAuthor's response

Author has 14 days (longer in exceptional circumstances) to concede to a challenge or file a rebuttal.

45 daysArbitrator's decision

Target timeline for arbitrator to resolve a challenge.

01

Post a Bounty

Attach a Truth Bounty — a cash pledge — to any claim or statement you stand behind. Choosing the size of the bounty and uploading your content takes minutes.

02

Share the Badge

Your content displays a Truth Bounty badge, so audiences can see at a glance that it has been bountied. The badge sends a clear message: the author has made a promise, backed by real stakes, that this content is accurate.

Vibrant Badge

Active Bounty

A Truth Bounty is attached to this content, the content is open to challenge.

Gold Badge

Closed Bounty

Red Badge

Successful Challenge

A Truth Bounty was attached to this content, and the bounty was won by a successful challenger.

  1. 1 halo1st challenge failed
  2. 2 halos2nd challenge failed
  3. 3 halos3rd challenge failed
  4. 4 halos4th to 6th failed

Halos are added when challenges fail. The more halos a badge carries, the more scrutiny the content has withstood. If a challenge succeeds, the badge turns red and any halos are removed.

03

Invite a Challenge

Anyone who believes the content is false or misleading can bring a challenge. To keep challenges serious, a challenger must pay a fee and submit a written basis for the challenge. Frivolous challenges don't get far; substantive ones do.

04

Respond to Challenges

The author receives the challenge and can choose to concede or go to arbitration. If the author concedes, the challenger gets half the Truth Bounty, and the author keeps the rest. Authors who proceed to arbitration submit a written defense of their content.

05

Resolve with Arbitration

Independent, professional arbitrators review the evidence from both sides and decide whether the challenger has shown that the bountied content is false or misleading. The process is rigorous, independent, and final.

Arbitrators answer this question: Has the challenger shown, by a preponderance of the evidence and argument, that the content is materially false or materially misleading? “Materially” means something a reasonable reader would consider important — not a trivial error. Content that expresses an opinion can't be “false,” though it can be misleading if it leads readers to a false conclusion of fact.
06

The Reward

If the challenge succeeds, the challenger gets the Truth Bounty. If the challenge fails, the Truth Bounty remains in place — and the signal of trust is stronger than ever.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Posting a bounty requires a fee, based on our current fee schedule.

It's held in escrow by an independent third party — not by Truth Bounties. It stays there until the challenge period closes or a challenge succeeds.

Yes. We need a fixed record of what content you've bountied. Without it, someone could post a bounty on one version of their content and then swap in something different while still displaying the Truth Bounties badge.

That's up to you. You can let us show it in full on our platform, next to your badge. Or you can keep it private, meaning we will just show a short summary next to your badge. Either way, we keep the copy so we can check that what you originally posted matches what a challenger is disputing.

Not exactly. As long as no challenge is in the queue, you can withdraw your bounty, revise your content, and post it again with a new bounty, at a reduced fee. If a challenge is active, you can't edit or withdraw your content.

No. Your content has to be accessible to the public — free, or available on reasonable terms, like through a paywall. The Truth Bounties system depends on people being able to see your content and challenge it. We also need our own access to it: if your content isn't freely accessible, you'll need to give Truth Bounties free access to it for as long as the bounty is open, so we can retrieve and check it during authenticity review. If we don't already have that access when we need it, we may get access another way and charge you for the cost.

Six months from the day you post it. The clock runs continuously and doesn't pause, even while a challenge is underway. As that period nears its end, you'll choose to either close the bounty and get your money back, or repost it for another six months. If a challenge is still in progress when the period would otherwise end, the bounty stays open until that challenge is finished.

They're canceled, and the challengers get their money back.

That's always your choice — you can do that at any time, even after a challenge has succeeded and your badge has turned red. You can also leave the content up and just remove the badge. We don't control what happens on your own site. Whatever you do there, we keep a permanent record of what happened on the Truth Bounties platform.
